I am so fascinated by my kids' hands. When Greyson was first born, he would wave his hands around in this very elegant, complicated ballet while he ate. It was such a contented motion. And then, around two months or so, he started using those hands to reach out and touch things, and it was hard to tell which he found more fascinating, the things he was touching or the hands themselves. He went through a long phase where he would flick his fingertips back and forth across different textures, checking them out. And now those hands are large and really capable-looking, and dexterous enough to unscrew a bottle cap or operate the TiVo remote.
Charles was born with these long, long fingers. Kind of ET-ish, really! It used to fascinate me to watch him as he sat there looking at things, turning them over and over in his hands or trying to figure out how things went together. The look of absorption, total concentration, on his face was such a beautiful thing. It was like watching his brain in action. And they're so SOFT! Every time he touches me I am startled anew at how soft his hands are and how delicate his touch. (Also, how sharp his fingernails. Must cut more often!)
