clutter vs. mess

Before we put our house on the market, I admit the stuff used to get to me. Piles everywhere, things waiting to be given away, projects waiting to be finished—it was a bit of chaos. Then we cleaned. Packed all the "unnecessary" things away for a less "lived-in" feel. And I hated that even more. Without all my belongings—the pictures on every inch of wall, the bookshelves in every room—I no longer felt like this was my space. It was more like being a caretaker for the future owners.

Fortunately for me, my other half feels the same way. I can only imagine what it would be like if one of us liked the old way, with all the stuff, and the other liked the new way, with nothing.

But I wouldn't want to go completely back to the whole catastrophe, with the unfinished, un-put-away things all over the place. That's the kind of thing that gets you down when you come home to it. (I say this, with piles of paper spread out all over my desk. But I think desks have different rules.) This my other half doesn't care so much about. Unsurprisingly.

At any rate, I think what it comes down to is that I deeply miss my clutter, but I am happy to be living without my mess.
