Another week of American Idol has come and gone ... and that's about all there is to say for it. The second edition of Beatles week was about as lackluster as could be expected (especially if you're not a particular fan of the Beatles), despite Idol's attempt to differentiate the two by calling one "Lennon/McCartney" week and the other "Beatles week". None of the contestants gave particularly memorable performances, and Amanda was voted off, which I doubt I'll notice. I thought she was a fine performer, but overall was ambivalent. Except insofar as I think she's pretty happy with the life she's going back to, and I wish her well.
Top Chef was slightly more exciting. The Quickfire (create a dish using only five ingredients) wasn't too interesting, but the Elimination Challenge was. The chefs were required to form teams named after animals and cater an event at the zoo showcasing the types of foods their animals ate. As is typical, especially at this stage of the competition, the losing teams were much more interesting. Personally, while I think it's silly that no one tasted them, I thought the team with the ugly and apparently gross blueberry stuffed mushrooms overall gave a greater showing, although I don't think Nikki has much longer in the competition.
The eventual eliminee, Valerie, apparently gave an interview where she claimed it was someone else's blini recipe and someone else's idea that got her booted off ... but I think that showcases the problem right there. The kind of chef they're looking for doesn't say, "Oh, you think I should make a blini? Well, okay." S/he says, "Heck, no, I'm not making a blini for the first time at a catered event. This is my idea, and you need to listen to it." Valerie lacked the confidence to speak up for herself, and I think that, more than the poor dish, was what cost her the competition.
On to next week!
