Yesterday, my son Charles did something my children almost never do - he came downstairs to the basement while I was folding laundry to ask if he could open the box of animal crackers. Usually, they stand somewhere upstairs calling my name and asking questions that I can't here while I'm downstairs shouting out my location and telling them to wait until I come back up. I was very pleased with the little guy, and I said so - I looked him in the eye and thanked him for coming down and asking so nicely.
His face lit up the room. He was so proud of himself, and so thrilled that I was proud of him, too.
It's a good reminder that something simple like apologizing when you've been in the wrong, or thanking them for something they've done unexpectedly right (especially if they don't even know they've done something remarkable) can make their day, which turns right around and makes yours.
