book reviews

Erle Stanley Gardner, The Case of the Glamorous Ghost. This was a good installment - Della Street got a bit more to do than usual, the case was a little bigger than the standard murder. On the other hand, the ending was a bit rushed, the district attorney more shrill than usual. Not Perry's best, but enjoyable, nonetheless.

Martha McIntosh, ed., Jan Karon's Mitford Cookbook and Kitchen Reader. I'm a fan of the Mitford books and of the down-home meals served in them. The cookbook was interesting and the recipes largely tasty. Not sure I'd buy it again.

Louis L'Amour, Chancy. Chancy's an unusual character for L'Amour - not a natural or experienced mountain man, but a young man from the hills, self-taught. There's a bit more coincidence than you'd expect, and he tends to be more capable than you would imagine he might be, but it's L'Amour, and he makes it work.

John and Abigail Adams, The Letters of ... This is a compilation of all the letters between these two great friends and partners during the Revolutionary Period. Homey, intelligent, loving, they outline the great love story that was this marriage. Well worth reading.
