moving on down the road

As you know, I love houses. And the houses I pass every day on my way to and from various places become like personal friends. I mentioned earlier the house that has nudged its way into my brain as "my mother's house" and its next door neighbor, which looks like a house my Aunt Sarah would live in. The next three houses down are also interesting and have very distinct personalities.

There's the "party house" - it's a Tudor style, with lots of windows. When you drive by, winter or summer, after dark, you can see white Christmas-style lights strung all over the house, and a lot of red in the decor. There are also big poinsettia plants in the front windows ... it could well be a house owned by a serious Christmas-lover! Mostly it just looks like they're always ready for a party.

The next house down looks empty. The lawn is always well taken care of, but there's nothing else. No shrubs, no flowers, no decorations, no children's toys. During the winter, if it hadn't been for the small bag of garbage put out once a week, I'd never have known anyone lived there. (With summer time, there's been a slight change - there's now a small vegetable garden in a side yard. The only sign of life to be found!)

On the corner is a house with no "name" attached. It's a pretty normal house really, but has one oddity - in the far corner of the yard, next to the road, is a gate. There's no fence, you understand ... just the white gate. Which you could easily walk around instead of going through. During the spring, the gate fell over, and I wondered what they would do - a few weeks later, they repaired it. Leaving me still wondering - is it a gate to a magic world? Where would you go if you went through it? Hmmm... Maybe I'll have to try it someday.
