sick days

Middle child is home sick today. It was a bit of a grey area this morning, whether he would go or not ... but he came home from school pretty miserable yesterday, he was miserable this morning, and he was both pleased to stay home and okay with taking a nap (those are generally the tests of whether they're really under the weather, as all of my kids usually enjoy school and don't like missing it). Of course, once he got some cold medicine in him, 'sick day' turned into 'play Wii and watch TV' day.

But is there really anything wrong with that? One of my most vivid childhood memories is of spending a sick day cutting out paper dolls and watching TV in my nightgown. Had I gone to school that day, would the memory have been equally as vivid? I doubt it. My high school did two 'free day's a year, where school would be unexpectedly cancelled - I remember many of those, as well, with special fondness.

It's easy to overdo such things, take it from 'special occasion' to 'expected', but I think an occasional sick day is a good thing.
