stories

It occurred to me yesterday what a wonderful time this is to be a person who lives in their imagination. Books, movies, TV, an entire internet filled with the work-product of creative people all within easy reach - it's a smorgasboard of fiction. A hundred years ago, the mind might take flight, but alone. People who spent their days imagining other lives and other worlds had to keep those thoughts largely to themselves (unless they were extremely lucky) ... if they had the luxury to imagine in the first place. (Makes you wonder what they thought about - walking behind a plow, running a machine, scrubbing someone else's house. Nowadays we'd do all those things with iPod/podcast/internet radio hooked into our ears and consider it 'boring' if we had to do it without one of those distractions.)

Of course, as I go about my daily life with scenarios from fictional lives (my own or someone else's) playing in my head, I generally can't talk about those things with the people I come into contact with ... but thanks to the wonders of the internet, I've met people I can talk to about those things ... and it's given me a greater appreciation for what might be going on in the minds of the seemingly normal people I interact with in 'real life'. Who knows - maybe one of them is writing in their head, too.
