new-fallen snow

When I'm up in the middle of the night (which is less frequent than it used to be, but still happens reasonably often) and look out into the vast expanse of white in the back yard, I fully understand the line "The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow/Gave a luster of midday to objects below." I don't think I ever got it before - but our yard, with its lack of artificial light and the even covering of snow it bears, illustrates the point quite well. Now, if only I can look out one night and see "a miniature sleigh with eight tiny reindeer", not to mention "the little old driver, so lively and quick". It would be a dream come true.
