It seems as though this fall has caught everyone unawares. I certainly wasn't on the ball with my back-to-school tasks: by the time I got to the school supplies section at Target, it was well and truly picked over, nearly ready for the Halloween display to go up; and I didn't get the welcome letters for new students out until less than a week before school started.
The preschool didn't announce opening dates until September was almost upon us. Delaying, I hear, to try and drum up a larger enrollment, although how that affected the beginning of the school year is a mystery to me. Now the soccer organization, complaining that it's short of coaches for Charles's age group, still hasn't sent out rosters or practice schedules, and the first game is (supposed to be) a week from tomorrow. (What particularly bugs me here is that they said rosters would be out on August 29, last Sunday. That day came and went with no word. Is it really that hard to send a quick email saying they're still having trouble with the rosters?)
Apparently Labor Day is some kind of magic barrier that has to be crossed before people can truly get in the swing of things. Hopefully once we've passed that randomly determined "end of summer" these various organizations will get a little more organized.
