Teacher assignments came out yesterday, which has me thinking about the upcoming school year. I have more time than before to be able to get into the school and help out, but I don't intend to overdo it.
At heart, school is the kid's life, not mine. The idea is to be there enough that the kids know I'm there if they need them, the staff recognizes me as an active and approachable parent, and I have a frame of reference to understand what the boys are talking about when they discuss school. But not so much that the boys feel like they can never get away, the staff considers me to be hovering, or being in the school eats up all my free time.
As Greyson approaches the upper grades, it's time to get a little more hands-off and let him start to work on his own sense of responsibility. In regard to not only his belongings and his schoolwork but also to the way he interacts with others. I remember that my mother was always there to be the 'big guns' if I really needed something ... but she was also a bit too willing to be the rapid-fire artillery, and that's the part I'd like to avoid.
In the meantime, I look forward to the return of school, not just for me and my quiet house and my schedule, but for the boys and their immersion in the sea of people and activity.
