it is what it is

There's a fair amount of stress associated with relatives you're not that close to coming to visit, especially when they do so extremely rarely. What message are you sending? How should your house look, your yard, your children? Should everyone be on their best behavior? Or should you be natural - presentable, yes, but not overly, or unusually, pristine?

I've been back and forth on this considering this upcoming visit, and am leaning toward the second. I'm embracing the second where the yard is concerned, and to a great extent, where the house is concerned. As far as behavior is concerned, it's a bit more difficult, and I'll probably be back and forth a few more times. But when it all comes down to it, my life is what my life is. And if they don't like it, I suppose they don't have to come back in eight years.
